2019 Downingtown Wrestling Team
Over the 1st and 2nd of March five Whippet wrestlers competed in the Southeast Regional Tournament held at Souderton Area High School. Downingtown West came in 6th place in the team standings with 71.5 points.
Pat Cusack (220) was one of our five Regional Qualifiers for the Whippets. Pat won his first match by a major decision 11 – 2. After two more really tough matches Pat’s junior season came to an end. Pat had a great season with a total of 36 wins and a 22 of them by fall.
Joe Shafer (195) was also one of our five Regional Qualifiers. Friday night Joe won his first match by fall in 1:02. Joe lost his second match moving him to the consolation second round. Joe’s third match he won by major decision (8-0) but his senior season did end in round 3 of the consolations. However this season was a success for Joe, he had 24 wins this season, 13 pins, and earned his 100th win during districts.
Dom Findora (106) is continuing his road to Hershey after placing 5th at the Regional Tournament. Dom started the tournament off with a Tech Fall in the 3rd period which placed him in the quarterfinals. During the quarterfinal round, Dom won by major decision (7-0). Unfortunately, Dom lost in the semi-finals to a returning state qualifier. Dom had a tough match in the consi-semis but came back to win the 5th place match by decision (4-3).
Chase Mielnik (182) is also continuing his road to Hershey after taking home the 2nd place medal. Chase won by fall in 2:32 in the first round of competition before moving on to the quarterfinals and winning by major decision (11-3). Chase had a major decision (10-0) in the semi-finals securing him a spot in the championship bout. Chase fought hard and earned a 2nd place finish and a ticket to Hershey!
Maximus Hale (170) will see the mats in Hershey along with Dom and Chase. Maximus went 4-0 at Regionals and, just like last year, saw the top of the podium. Maximus won his first two matches by major decisions (10-0, 15-4) before winning by decision (10-3) in the semi-finals. During the championship bout Maximus fought hard and won by decision with a score of 13 – 9, securing his spot to Hershey.
Good luck to Dom, Maximus, and Chase at the PIAA 3A State Tournament. Tickets are still available through the Giant box office (Hershey, PA); wrestling starts Thursday March 7th at 4 pm.
