Covey Austin (285), Jeff Jackman (145) and Dan Pommerer (126) were all 1st team members. Jason Madanat (152), Michael Pommerer (113) and Pete Rhoads (160) were all honorable mention. Whippets hand out season awardsThe Whippet Wresting team held their annual awards banquet on Wednesday March 21 at St. Anthony’s Lodge in Downingtown. The Whippets celebrated the accomplishments and improvements that were made and issued the challenges that lie ahead. The team is already hard at work in preparation for next year. Whippet junior Dan Pommerer received the MVP award, as well as the award for most falls (15). Dan compiled a season record of 32-5. His dual meet record was a stellar 26-1. Dan scored an impressive 126 team points and gave up only 3. Dan concluded his season at the District 1 South Tournament finishing in 6th place. AJ Garber was named the Rookie of the year for his efforts. AJ concluded his freshmen year with a 16-7 record and a Section IV runner up finish. Other season awards were Mike Pommerer- Coaches Appreciation Award, Pete Rhoads- Most Courageous and Jason Madanat- Most Improved. Congratulations on your efforts.

Whippet 126 pounder Dan Pommerer leads the way for WEST. Dan draws the second seed and will have a first round bye. Also competing for the Whippets will be AJ Garber (106), Michael Pommerer (113), Jason Madanat (152) and Gabe Hale (170). WEST JV wrestlers conclude seasonSixteen Whippet wrestlers spent the Presidents day holiday competing at the Chester County JV Championships. These future varsity stars competed against 12 schools in the culminating tournament for JV wrestlers. The Whippets were led by 106 pound champion Troy Smith. Troy captured the 106 pound title with a hard fought 8-6 decision in the finals. Also placing for WEST were Dante Angelini (2nd at 120), Dan Cutillio (2nd at 126), Tommy O’Brien (3rd at 182), Chris Fagerli (3rd at 285), Nissan Thach (4th at 138) and Mike Duplicki (4th at 195). Congratulations to all place finishers!
Whippets advance 5 to DistrictsThe Whippets battled through some adversity and some stiff competition to advance 5 athletes to the District 1 South Tournament. WEST was lead by 126 pound champion Dan Pommerer. Dan turned in a great performance on Saturday with a win by fall over Jim Stong of Spring-Ford. Whippet freshmen AJ Garber was WEST’s other finalist, but he fell short in the finals to place second. Placing third and advancing were Mike Pommerer (113) and Gabe Hale (170). Jason Madanat placed fourth and will also advance to the district tournament. Best of luck in the post-season.
Section IV seeds announcedWith the Sectional tournaments kicking off around District 1 in roughly 24 hours, the seeds have been released. The Whippets earned two 1st seeds and 3 3rd seeds in the competitive Section IV Tournament held at Boyertown. Grabbing the top seed at 106 pounds is freshmen AJ Garber. AJ enters the post season with a 13-4 record. Junior Dan Pommerer boosts a 26-2 record and finds himself as the top seed at 126 pounds. Twin brother Michael Pommerer is the 3rd seed at 113 pounds (record of 22-5), as well as senior Jason Madanat (3rd at 152 with a record of 27-8) and junior Mike McClelland (3rd at 220 with a record of 20-6). Wrestling gets under way at 9:30 am. The top four finishers in each weight will qualify for the District 1 South Tournament on Friday February 24 and Saturday February 25 at Spring-Ford High School. Whippets edge WarriorsThe Whippets closed out the regular season with a huge 33-32 win over the Warriors from West Chester Henderson. This was a complete TEAM effort, as even the athletes that lost, saved the TEAM those coveted points. Winning for WEST were Dan Pommerer (126), Jeff Jackman (145), Jason Madanat (152), Peter Rhoads (170), Mike McClelland (220) and Covey Austin (285). The Whippets trailed by 11 heading into the last two matches. WEST needed a pin in each match in order to secure the victory. The big men up top took care of business, first by McClelland at the 1:03 mark. Whippet big- man Covey Austin sent the bench and fans into a frenzy, as he got the fall at the 5:01 mark to give the Whippets a 33-32 victory. The Whippets will now prepare for the post season. First up is the Section 4 Tournament Saturday February 18 at Boyertown. Wrestling is set to begin at 9:30. The top 4 in each weight class will advance to the District 1 South Tournament at Spring-Ford on February 24-25. Any wrestler not competing in the Section 4 tournament will be competing in the Chester County JV Championships on Monday February 20 at Downingtown East. Go WEST!!!
Whippets top Father JudgeThe Whippets closed out their home schedule with a 43-23 win over Father Judge on Wednesday evening. This was the second win in as many days for WEST. Winning for the Whippets were Mike McClelland (220-FFT), Covey Austin (285- decision), Mike Pommerer (113-Fall), Mike Murta (120-decision), Dan Pommerer (132-major decision), Jeff Jackman (145-Fall), Pete Rhoads (160-Fall), Gabe Hale (170- Fall) and Tommy O’Brien (182- decision). Next up for the Whippets are the Warriors of West Chester Henderson. WEST will travel to WC with a chance at gaining a share of the league title. A win keeps their hopes alive. Start times are as follows; JV 6:15 and Varsity 7:15.
Whippets defeat Red RaidersThe Whippets continued their push toward the post season, posting a 45-24 victory over the Coatesville Red Raiders. Winning for the Whippets were Jason Madanat (160), Pete Rhoads (170), Gabe Hale (182), Covey Austin (285), Walker Michels (106), Troy Smith (113), Mike Pommerer (120), Dan Pommerer (132), and Jeff Jackman (152). With the win, WEST improved their record to 3-1 in the league and 15-8 overall. The Whippets will host Father Judge on Wednesday February 8, before closing out the regular season on Friday February 10 at WC Henderson in a big league dual. Start times are JV 6:15 and Varsity 7:15.
Whippets shine on senior nightThe Whippets sent their seniors out on a high note as they defeated the WC East Vikings 46-18 in front of their home crowd. The Whippets won 10 of the 14 contested bouts. The evening started with WEST recognizing their three seniors Brandon Diec, Garrett Sullivan and co-captain Jason Madanat. Covey Austin got things started with a fall at 285, followed by consecutive wins from AJ Garber (technical fall at 106), Mike Pommerer (fall at 113), Mike Murta (major decision at 120), Dan Pommerer (fall at 126), Tristen Reynolds (OT decision at 132), Manao Taniguchi (decision at 138), Jeff Jackman (fall at 145), Jason Madanat (decision at 152) and Pete Rhoads (major decision at 160). The Whippets return to action next week at Coatesville on Tuesday February 7 in another important league dual. WEST will host Father Judge on Wednesday February 8, before closing out the season in a league dual at WC Henderson on Friday February 10.
Whippets battle at D1 dualsThe Whippets turned in a strong performance on Thursday at Pottsgrove in the first round of the District 1 TEAM Duals. The Whippets went toe to toe with a revamped and game Methacton team. WEST entered the last match trailing by 5, when Peter Rhoads got the final slap of the mat to secure the 33-32 victory. This set the stage for a showdown with 2nd seeded Norristown H.S. The Whippets battled the game Eagles of Norristown, but dropped a 32-44 decision.
Winning for the Whippets against Methacton were Gabe Hale (182), Mike McClelland (220), Michael Pommerer (113), Dan Pommerer (132), Jeff Jackman (145), Jason Madanat (152), and Pete Rhoads (170). In the battle against Norristown, the Whippets used wins from AJ Garber (106), Mike Murta (120), Tristen Reynolds (126), Dan Pommerer (132), Manoa Taniguchi (138) and Jason Madanat (152). Your Whippets return to action on Wednesday February 1 as they host WC East in a league dual. This is Senior recognition night for the Whippets; I hope that you can join us to honor these young men. Downingtown WEST seeded 15th in dualsThe 2012 District 1 TEAM Duals seeds were announced on Sunday. The Whippets earned a 15th seed from the District 1 Steering Committee. West will take on Methacton in the opening round on Thursday January 26 at 5:30 at Pottsgrove Middle School. The winner will take on the number 2 seed Norristown at 7:30. Whippets finish 6th at BellefonteThe Whippet Wrestling Team battled through the elements, a delayed start and some tough competition on Saturday at Bellefonte to post a 6th place finish. The Whippets opened the day against Lehighton with a 53-23 victory, followed by a 21-47 loss to #16 in the state Central Mountain and a 61-15 victory over Hazelton. The Whippets dropped the final two matches of the day, both on the last bout to host Bellefonte 33-38 and Bald Eagle Area 39-40. Downingtown’s Dan Pommerer (126) led the way for the team, going 5-0 on the day. AJ Garber (106), Jason Madanat (152) and Mike McClelland (220) were all 4-1 on the day. The Whippets are back in action on Wednesday in a league dual at West Chester Henderson. JV starts at 6:15 followed by varsity at 7:15.
Whippets race past RidleyThe Whippet Wrestling Team made its second trip to Delaware County in less than a week for a non-league dual against the Green Raiders of Ridley. West won 11 of the 14 contested bouts to earn a 53-18 victory. Winning for the Whippets were Troy Smith (106), Michael Pommerer (113), Dan Pommerer (126), Tristen Reynolds (132), Manoa Taniguchi (138), Jeff Jackman (145), Jason Madanat (152), Pete Rhoads (160), Gabe Hale (170), Brandon Diec (195) and Mike McClelland (220). The Whippets will be back in action on Saturday January 21 at Bellefonte High School. Start time on Saturday is 9 am.
Whippets down BucsThe Whippets traveled to Interboro Friday January 13 and won 10 of 14 matches to post a 48-21 victory. Winning for the Whippets were Troy Smith (106), AJ Garber (113), Michael Pommerer (120), Dan Pommerer (126), Tristan Reynolds (132), Jeff Jackman (152), Jason Madanat (160), Gabe Hale (182), Brandon Diec (195) and Mike McClelland (220). West returns to Delaware County on Tuesday to take on the Green Raiders of Ridley. JV starts at 6:15 with varsity scheduled to start at 7:15.
Whippets finish 6th at Rock Yard DualsThe Whippets battled through some tough competition to finish in 6th place at the Rock Yard Duals held at Council Rock North High School. West started off the day with a 34-25 win over perennial New Jersey power Absegami. West dropped the next two matches to Council Rock North 16-40 and Germantown Academy 15-54. West closed out the day with a victory over Hatboro Horsham 42-26, before falling to Upper Moreland 30-35. Leading the way for the Whippets were the Pommerer twins, Michael (113) and Dan (126). Each went 5-0 on the day. Dan recorded 3 falls and 2 major decisions. Michael had 5 hard fought wins, including an impressive 4-3 decision over Zach Lyall at 120. Gabe Hale (170) and AJ Garber (113) were 4-1 and 3-0 respectively. The Whippets return to action on Wednesday January 11 when they travel to Coatesville for a league dual. Start times are as follows: JV 6:15 and Varsity 7:15.
Whippets drop home openerThe Whippet Wrestling team dropped a tough 24-42 decision to cross-town rival Downingtown East. West pulled to within 9 points with three matches to go after a thrilling pin by 145-pounder Jeff Jackman. West dropped the final three matches to close the dual. Winning for the Whippets were Michael Pommerer, Dan Pommerer, Manoa Taniguchi, Jeff Jackman and Mike McClelland.
